Fresh Produce Salesperson

Job Summary

The Fresh Produce salesperson is responsible for developing and maintaining new and existing accounts with retail, wholesale and food service customers. This position is responsible for overseeing the transportation of produce from suppliers to store retailers. The Fresh Produce Salesperson is responsible for determining the produce requirements of customers including quantities and product type, and providing clients with pricing information. This role requires the building and maintenance of strong relationships with customers, buyers and suppliers.

Essential Duties:

  • Arrange for the resale of purchased produce to Customers.

  • Review Customer requirements of retail establishments and determine the quantity and type of produce required for purchase.

  • Select merchandise which best fits the Customer’s requirements.

  • Identify and interview new Customers and negotiate prices, discounts, credit terms and transportation arrangements.

  • Oversee the distribution of produce to store locations to maintain adequate stock levels.

  • Establish and maintain contact with grocery stores/retailers and suppliers.

  • Ensure quality and freshness of all grocery products.

  • Assess client’s needs and resources and recommend the appropriate goods and quantity.

  • Maintain sales records for inventory control.

  • Check all invoices for shortages and proper billing.

  • Read and analyze market conditions.

  • Monitor the status of accounts and resolve any conflicts/concerns.

  • Analyze and improve the delivery of products to customers.

  • Provide pricing information to customers on a daily, weekly and/or monthly basis; develop specific quote worksheets for customers.

  • Follow-up with clients/prospects to educate on new products.

  • Contribute to company marketing efforts by providing new ideas, market intelligence and buying patterns/trends.

  • Other duties shall be assigned as required.

Requirements:

  • 5 years’ experience in sales preferably in the fresh produce business

  • Must have knowledge of fresh produce grocery items, including perishables, organics and natural products.

  • Knowledge of produce industry and its regulations and publications.

  • Knowledge of logistics and the ability to work closely with Transportation department.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong negotiation skills.

  • Strong relationship building skills.

  • Experience with computers including data entry and spreadsheets.

  • Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems, including: word processing, managing files and records.

  • Strong mathematical abilities.
